OUR VISION

LASTING IMPACT IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES

SportsPower International's vision has always been to bring hope to hurting disadvantaged children and young adults around the world. We now have the opportunity to increase our impact domestically.

SportsPower is partnering and co-founding a new nonprofit to meet these particular needs, Esther’s House.

Esther's House will provide transitional housing, specialty tailored programs and support for girls aging out of foster care and impacted by human trafficking. Through our long-term model of care, our goal is to help young people build a healthy foundation as they move towards independent adulthood.

THE ISSUE OUR YOUTH ARE FACING

WHAT IS “AGING OUT”?

Each year approximately 24,000 American teens turn 18 years old in foster care and are emancipated to live independently. This is called “aging out.” Many are still in high school, must find a job, a place to live, transportation and head out into the world alone. Although most are extremely eager to venture out on their own, very few have the resources, role models, and life skills necessary to be successful. They are often left ill-equipped to navigate a path to a self-sufficiency and independent adulthood. This leaves them vulnerable to homelessness, human trafficking, and a host of other threats and obstacles that jeopardize their well-being, future happiness and stability.

What is the connection

BETWEEN HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND FOSTER CARE?

Human traffickers prey on individuals who are most vulnerable which is why children in foster care have a greater risk of becoming victims than those who are not in the system. Things that make people more susceptible to human trafficking include:

  • Feelings of hopelessness and depression

  • Children who have experienced trauma

  • Runaways from group or foster homes

  • Young adults who are sent out of foster care at the age of 18

  • Homelessness

For the last 40 years, SportsPower International has inspired young and old alike to make right choices in life.

SportsPower utilizes the powerful platform of NBA players and other professional athletes to influence youth in a positive way. At SportsPower events, selected players share their personal stories of how they handled adversity as well as success. Their inspirational talks emphasize the necessity of character, leadership, responsibility, and faith while bringing a message of hope to the United States and around the world. The result is powerful!
